Pitching guidelines
CHEESE is a magazine of culture; we explore people, place and product
Each piece we commission is to be focused on a specific cheese - you are telling the story of culture through the lens of a cheese. Ultimately this is a magazine about people, so even stories about place, need to be about the people and the community
We are interested in:
-
Historical stories
-
Profile pieces
-
Stories that look at communities
-
Personal experiences / relationship to a cheese
-
Stories about cows (/ farming / agriculture)
-
Interesting drinks pairings
-
How a cheese has shaped a community / a local economy / a culture
-
Photo stories
We aren’t interested in:
-
Reviews of a particular cheese, one-off interviews (with cheesemongers, cheesemakers, farmers), travelogues, coverage of a cheese festival
-
Have a look at the below issue 1 contents to know what cheese and topics we've already covered

Word count:
We are open to short and long reads (anywhere between 750 and 2000 words)
Things to be aware of:
-
Each issue will look to get a balance of global regions and style of cheese; therefore two soft cheeses are unlikely to be featured in one issue, or a cheese from South West France and another from the Spanish Basque Country.
-
Each piece has a focus on a specific cheese - through that cheese a story is told.
Rates:
Currently, our rates are fixed at £75 for all contributors.

If you are a writer with experience in photography or you can shoot good pictures to go with your story/would like to, do let us know when you pitch. If you can provide links to your published photography, that’d be great as well.
How to pitch CHEESE:
-
Pitches should be 2 to 3 paragraphs and emailed to thecheesemag@gmail.com.
-
Give us an idea of what the story is all about, how you would cover it, how many words do you envision it to be
-
Please be clear about which specific cheese you've chosen to focus on (of course other cheese can be mentioned!)
-
If you have any links to your previously published pieces, please include 2-3 of them as well. They don’t have to necessarily be about cheese or even food!
-
If you want to take photos as part of your piece, do mention that.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
